CHOOSING A PROGRAM The first step in your study abroad journey is to choose which program to apply to. There are 2 programs at UH which you can choose to study abroad with: Manoa International Exchange Program (MIX) and UH Study Abroad Center (SAC). Both programs are slightly different so you should think look into which program is a better fit for you. Because I wanted to study in South Korea (or some where in Asia), I decided to go with MIX since there were more options of countries and colleges in Asia compared to SAC. However, feel free to do your own research to see which program is a better fit for you. 1) Do your own research Take the time to do a bit of research on which country you want to go to and the universities you can apply to. 2) Talking to your advisor Since you will be taking classes abroad, it is strongly recommended to talk to your advisor to determine what classes you may be able to take abroad, which classes can transfer back to UH, and how it will affect your academic pathway. For Shidler students, you would have to talk to Rikki Mitsunaga, the Shidler Undergraduate Academic Advisor, about your classes. I am a Travel Industry Management major, so I went to my advisor, Carissa Gusman, TIM Academic Advisor & Student Exchange Coordinator, to discuss my options. I learned that if I wanted to study in South Korea, my 2 options were either Kyunghee University or Sejong University through MIX. 3) Deadlines! Summer, Fall, & Academic Year Exchanges: Application Opens: August 1st Application Deadline: December Spring Exchanges: Application Opens: January 1st Application Deadline: May 1st Keep in mind the application deadline and apply early! APPLYING TO MIX Filling out the application form is fairly straightforward, however it will take you about 30 minutes-1 hour to complete. There is a short answer portion of the application at the end which will take the most time to complete, so I suggest typing your answers on a separate document and then transferring it to the application (in case it gets deleted). You will also need your passport on hand when completing the application.
